Bolzano lies in a valley surrounded by hills and vineyards. It is the gateway to the Dolomite mountain range. In the medieval town centre, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology houses the Neolithic mummy Ötzi, the man from Similaun. Nearby are the imposing 13th-century Mareccio Castle and Bolzano Cathedral with its Gothic-Romanesque architecture.
Merano is an Alpine town known for its thermal baths and Art Nouveau buildings. The Sissi Trail leads to Trauttmansdorff Castle with its terraced gardens and the Touriseum with exhibitions on Alpine tourism. On the slopes of the Ifinger peak there is a ski area with slopes and snow parks, which also invites you to go hiking in summer.
In Trento, the most famous monument is the Buonconsiglio Castle with its late medieval frescoes. The cathedral has a rose window and a Baroque chapel, and the Casa Cazuffi-Rella, a Renaissance building with a frescoed façade, overlooks the piazza of the same name. The Science and Natural History Museum has very interesting and interactive exhibits.

Some tourist tips
One of the most important places for visitors to Trento is the Piazza del Duomo, which is also a meeting place for the people of Trento. Many centuries ago it witnessed the Council of Trento, and today it attracts tourists from all over the world. Piazza Duomo is overlooked by some of the city’s most important buildings, from the Cathedral of San Vigilio to Palazzo Pretorio, from the colourful and frescoed Case Cazuffi-Rella to the Fountain of Neptune.
The Museum of Science and Natural History (MUSE) is located in the historic Palazzo delle Albere, designed by architect Renzo Piano. Buonconsiglio Castle is one of Trentino‘s historical monuments: it consists of several historical buildings surrounded by walls higher than the city itself.
For those who want to end the day with a glass of wine or local beer, Trento offers several pubs suitable for young and old. The most popular neighbourhoods for nightlife are the historic centre and Piedicastello. One of the main attractions during the winter season is the Christmas market: here you can buy Christmas decorations made of local handcrafts, admire unique nativity scenes and taste typical dishes at the food stalls.

The University of Trento is a jewel in the crown of the South Tyrolean community. The University was founded in 1962 and immediately focused on building alliances with Italian and foreign institutions and organisations. In 1982, the Free University of Trento was transformed into a state university with special status.
Known for the quality of its degree programmes, the university has more than 16,000 students, about 600 teachers and researchers, and the same number of technical and administrative staff. The numbers speak for a university that offers an ideal environment for study and research.
